Postal Services in East Jerusalem

Postal Services

Today, (July 19, 2018), a verdict was handed down in response to ACRI's 2010 petition regarding the postal services in East Jerusalem. At the time the petition was filed, the postal services in East Jerusalem were barely functioning. A significant portion of the mail did not reach its destination at all, while much of what did arrive was delivered late.

In the recent years since ACRI filed the petition, significant improvements have been made. Moreover, all streets in East Jerusalem neighborhoods now have street signs, and the houses have address numbers.

The verdict validates the outline reached by the parties with direction of the court. According to the outline, tenders will be added and postal units will be opened in Shu'afat refugee camp, Qalandiya/Kafr 'Aqeb, Wadi al-Joz and Beit Safafa, and solutions will be developed for the distribution of mail in in the neighborhoods of Sur Baher, Jabel Mukaber, Sharafat, Kafr Aqab, Shuafat Refugee Camp and Silwan. Either there will be additional distribution centers set up, or regular distribution of mail to homes. All of this is to occur by the end of 2019 and in accordance with the instructions of the Ministry of Communication, which will monitor the developments.
