Dear friend,
I am happy and proud to share that today, after a decade of fighting, we succeeded in affecting major change for some of the poorest, most socioeconomically vulnerable families in the State of Israel. This morning, the Supreme Court accepted our petition and our unequivocal demand: to enable parents facing committees that decide the fate of at-risk children to have legal representation. These committees, among other things, determine whether a child should be removed from the home. Meanwhile, the parents are often single mothers; have cognitive, mental and physical disabilities; little to no formal education; or do not speak Hebrew.
Good news, in the form of a just decision that will help some of the most marginalized individuals is worth savoring. We hope that the Supreme Court's decision will ensure that parents are separated from their children rarely, in extreme situations where it is necessary. There are parents who need help, and children who need help, but removing a child from their home should be the last resort.
We have taken on some of the most challenging cases and most prominent army and government officials, but the truth is that every case that we pursue has the potential to make a massive difference in the lives of those affected, whether on a national level or a familial or individual one. It is energizing to think about how powerful we are together, and the confidence that gives us to dare to face even the toughest issues head on.
Here are some of the petitions we filed in recent months:
To prohibit the use of mounted police to disperse demonstrations;
To handle appeals from evacuees from the southern city of Sderot that have been ignored;
To allow critically ill patients from Kfar Aqab to use a less congested checkpoint to reach Jerusalem for medical treatment;
To remove from a violent settler from the West Bank;
To ensure that medical staff and medical supplies can reach Nasser Hospital, the last functioning hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza;
To limit the ability of the police to open investigations for speech offenses;
To repeal the law changing the composition of the judicial selection committee;
To repeal the law allowing for the imposition of draconian restrictions on citizens suspected of crimes;
To prohibit police officers from filming demonstrations and demonstrators on their personal phones;
To cancel the transfer of civilian authorities in the West Bank that will result in de-facto annexation.
Each of these petitions is an uphill battle to make Israel more democratic, more equal, and more committed to human rights. Every single donation proves that there is a strong and determined human rights community in Israel and abroad that will do whatever it takes and is not willing to give up. Every donation made until the end of the day today will be doubled.
Let's make more good news together. Donate Now.
We have not forgotten: 🛑 Stop the killing and starvation in Gaza 🛑 Stop the abandonment of the hostages 🛑 End the war. Now.
