Thanks to ACRI, the Jerusalem Municipality will Repair the Road it Destroyed in Ras Hamis

On June 24, 2025, police and officials from the Jerusalem municipality arrived at the East Jerusalem neighborhood Ras Hamis, located beyond the separation barrier, and partially destroyed the neighborhood’s main access road while carrying out a demolition order. Two days later, ACRI approached the Jerusalem Municipality with a demand to repair the road. Testimonies from local residents indicate that the road was partially destroyed as the vehicles were en route to demolish the designated building, and the municipal workers left the site after the demolition, completely ignoring the destruction they left in their wake. Residents' appeals to the municipality requesting that the road be repaired were ignored. 

In the appeal, Yotam Rotfeld from ACRI's legal department noted that the road, which also leads to two schools, had been paved only a month earlier, after many years of requests by residents to repair the road, whose neglected state endangered drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. The scattered asphalt blocks and the potholes that have now opened as a result of the destruction prevent the neighborhood’s hundreds of elderly and disabled roads from traversing the road on foot, hinder the access of hundreds of students to educational institutions, and endanger all of the area’s residents. The petition argues that the municipality's disregard for the major damage that it itself caused is unreasonable and violates the fundamental rights of residents, and that its outrageous conduct and subsequent indifference, combined with the years-long neglect of the neighborhoods beyond the separation barrier, is unacceptable. 

Following ACRI's appeal, the Jerusalem Municipality announced that it would pave the road.
