Dear friend,
The champagne was popped and high-fives and congratulatory pats on the back were exchanged. The cause for celebration? The passage of the Death Penalty Bill into law.
The disgraceful jubilation surrounding such a repugnant law by the racist and extremist Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir and other members of the government is possibly the clearest illustration of this government’s death-worship and disregard for the value of human life (particularly if that life is Palestinian). We have written about the law in detail and the myriad issues surrounding it; its passage is depressing and infuriating.
But we are not powerless, and this is not the end of the story. Minutes (literally) after the law passed, ACRI submitted a petition to the Supreme Court to repeal the law. Don’t let our speed fool you: our appeal is a strong one. We hoped that this moment would not come, but strategized in case it did. The result is a thorough, well-researched, and impressive petition that the Supreme Court should find hard to disregard.
You can also join in the fight to repeal this horrific law. We have established a dedicated fund that will support our work to repeal the Death Penalty Law. We will not give up until the law is rescinded, and your partnership is essential in ensuring that we are consistently able to show up in full force against this law.
Join us. Because we should live in a world in which humanity and human rights are celebrated.
