On May 25, 2026, ACRI sent an appeal to the Minister of National Security, demanding the immediate appointment of official prison visitors on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and the Israel Bar Association. In the appeal, Attorney Nitsan Ilani noted that the law requires the Minister to appoint official prison visitors, yet Ben Gvir has not appointed official visitors on behalf of the Ministry of Justice since the beginning of 2026, or on behalf of the Israel Bar Association since the beginning of 2023. As a result, no official prison inspections have been conducted by representatives of the Ministry of Justice for approximately five months, or by representatives of the Israel Bar Association for more than three years.
It is a requirement under the law that the Minister appoint official visitors; this is not something that is subject to the Minister’s discretion. These representatives are important for oversight and monitoring prison conditions and the work of the Israel Prison Service, as well as for protecting the human rights of incarcerated people. This is particularly true since October 7, 2023, which has seen a significant deterioration in prison conditions and in the treatment of both criminal and security prisoners.
